Start with your own skills development: If you do not bring value to small business owners, you cannot be an effective consultant. Persistently receive continuous education. Your needs are getting bigger and bigger, and you can charge higher fees based on the breadth of your knowledge and expertise.

Check your experience level: Few small business owners delegate their business to small business consultants who have never owned a business before, or to consultants who do not have high expertise in specific subject areas. An expert is defined as having 10,000 hours of experience, and they claim to be the subject of the expert. If you use the traditional 40-hour workweek as the ruler, it means that you need at least 5 years of full-time work experience to deal with small business topics before you can call yourself an expert.

Determine your big reason: Before embarking on designing business and attracting customers, first figure out why you should be a small business consultant and why you should help these owners. Why should I specify a specific target audience? What is your motivation? Knowing this will allow you to move forward when you encounter an inevitable slowdown in the process of building your business and serving customers.

Determine the “success” situation that is right for you: Keep your eyes on the target. The definition of success varies from person to person. Take some time to visualize all the ways that successful consulting practice has shown in your personal and professional life.

Write a business plan: Complete all the same steps as the customer will go through, and then design your own business model. Things to consider: What legal format will you use, what is your mission and vision statement, and what are the products, pricing, and profit models. Include resources required for success, such as money, time, skills/knowledge, equipment, and human resources. Set goals and milestones for the next 1, 3, and 5 years. Write a marketing plan: There are many small business consultants there. How will you stand out and stand out from the crowd? How will you establish contact with the audience and build rapport and trust? Will, you only use traditional marketing techniques, or will you combine traditional marketing with online marketing? Of the more than 100 available technologies, which one will bring the best results? How much (time and money) will you invest in marketing? What are your marketing goals? Read articles about how to choose the best marketing technology for the consulting business.

Learn coaching skills: You will work with humans who have their own strengths and weaknesses. Learn in-depth listening skills and how to ask meaningful questions to make them clear and provide focus. Learn how to hold customers accountable for implementing their action plans and how to deal with difficult customer situations. You will find that, as in the actual logistic work of operating an enterprise, you also work hard on the mentality of operating an enterprise owner.

Choose a focus or niche market: Determine if your major requires you to have a license or certificate (financial and tax advisor, legal advisor, insurance advisor). Will you focus on small topic areas such as email marketing strategies, or will you become an expert who can help clients cope with various challenges and projects? Do you work with companies of a certain size based on the number of employees or income? Will you only work with local customers, or is your consulting business national/international?

Decide whether to suggest to them or do work for them: Some consultants are more like mentors and consultants who work with small business owners on planning and strategy work. Other small business consultants provide specific services as subcontractors to increase the number of clients (such as part-time CFOs, website designers, and copywriters).

Understand the problems faced by most small business owners and develop strategies to define and solve these problems: When working with Compass Master Program participants, I outlined the first 29 questions my clients usually need help with. Use ready-made strategies, tools, and assessments to help solve these problems, or create your own strategies. Consider merging your own consultant’s toolkit.

Deeply understand the seven areas of the business model: to help your customers make changes in the areas that cause the most loss or maximize the return on investment.

Systematize your own business: so that you get maximum efficiency. Use templates, automation, and sales scripts. Spend some time creating these systems early in the business setup to free up time and energy to handle more important tasks. Tip: Then, you will introduce these efficiencies to your customers.

Get help in administrative and marketing work: Outsource tasks that you do not want to do, that you are not an expert, or waste your time generating income.

Get rid of yourself: Although your job can and should be meaningful to you, you are not a self-conscious consultant. You are a consultant serving customers. You will provide advice to them, help them determine the pros and cons of each action plan, and then let them make their own decisions. You cannot prevent them from making unwise decisions or prevent them from implementing the implementation plan. Similarly, if your customers have achieved great success, this may be partly due to your suggestions, but to achieve this goal, you need to get a lot of praise from customers. Determine in advance what “successful customer engagement” means to you.

Be honest with your personal development area: nobody is perfect. Sometimes we delay. Sometimes we are distracted. Sometimes, we let anger or fear make us better. Sometimes we have poor communication. Find your weaknesses, or learn how to overcome them, or hire employees to help them.

Choose marketing techniques that can bring qualified leads to the sales conversation: Keep track of your marketing. If your marketing results are not satisfactory, please adjust. Do n’t choose marketing techniques because if they do n’t bring potential customers or help you build brand awareness, they will become a hot trend.

Learn problem-solving, decision-making, project management, and time management skills: These four skills will provide you with a basis for customer assistance and help you successfully develop your own business.

Learn from the master: Why reinvent the wheel? By following the leading consultants in your industry, you can discover smart shortcuts. In any small business consulting field, there are always a few people who are promoted to be leaders in their industry. Research their products, their marketing methods, the way they run their business, and the way they work with customers. Determine if these methods can also serve you and your customers.
